News

Flash -As at this moment there is still no evidence suggesting that Beanz had anything to do with the burning down of his factory premises.

Recent games - Versus Toothless Tigers and Palm Beach were well supported by those remaining members who did not travel to the Cook Islands. Well over 20 players attended each game and that doesn't include the guys who looked after the BBQ and bar etc... A marvellous and much appreciated effort by all those concerned.

Cook Islands - We seem to be getting awfully good at organising and running these social tours. Fiji and Vanuata set a high benchmark and this tour proved to be just as good, indeed some of the party have already been making noises about going back. The local sides Mongoose and Sharks more than made us welcome, giving us a taste oif island rugby and finishing us off what can be said to be the best of local cusine, a veritable feast that we all more than indulged ouselves in.

Highlights of the trip, games at Sharks and Mongoose, Safari trip into the highest hinterland of the Cook Islands, the locals who are life happy, humorous, proud and generous, why is it anyone ever leaves these Islands, it's beyond me. Afternoon siesta's, cold beer around the pool, beautiful beaches and sunsets you only ever dream about and not forgetting the whales.

For those not used to seeing the sun set in the west.

Right, who is going to organise the next one, hands up please.

Dick hasn't been to well of late, a couple of heart scares but knowing Dick it wont be long before he's back in the saddle, meanwhile Carlton Brewery shares are in freefall. Get well soon, we want to see that good old rainbow shirt of yours back on the paddock sometime real soon, besides your our highest scorere and we need you bad.

Meanwhile our profile in the club is certainly on the up and up. Recently we have helped out at the Olde Boys Reunion and this weekend (11/09) we shall be running the bar for the Seniors Presentation night. It looks like we are becoming the 'can do' team who others at the club have no hesitation in approaching for help, of course we don't mind because we have broad shoulders and the club close to our hearts, we are more than happy to support our Senior and Junior brethren.

A word of thanks for the support given to us by representatives (see photo below) of our new major club sponsor 'Westpac'. They served up a treat on the old barbie's. ' at our recent mini-fest.

The attendance for our last two away games have been rather disappointing less than anticipated. I know there are a lot of us carrying knocks and some of you are averse to to the cold winter weather. Regardless lets m,ake the best efforts to at least put a full team out, we owe it ourselves and not least to our opponents.

Sponsored Juniors

A healthy turnout by our boys to support one of our sponsored Junior sides, the Sunnybank 13's Green had the desired affect as the lads ran out comfortable 53-7 winners over Souths. I couldn't fail to be impressed with their skill and execution levels and confidently expect that some of these lads will make it through to Premiers. This weekend (w/e 12/13) we will be supporting our other sponsored team, the under 8's.

cccccccccccCertainly the quickest one of our lads has moved this season.

I will be collating a selection of photo's from both the junior teams and putting them onour web site after the Under 8's have played.

If anyone has any good photo's from Hervey Bay send them to me for the newsletter anf this web site.

New Life Member

Since before time began Dick (Daktari) has been a promiment member of our team/club during which time he has served representatively at both club and function level, been consistently involved with fund raising activities and certainly never been shy of putting his two penny worth into any discussion or debate.

In appreciation and acknowledgement of this and his continueing effort Dick has overwhelmingly been decreed as a SBGO Life Member and as such receives all the respect and accolades associated with that position.

Congratulations Dick, and of course this award also applies to his faithful sidekick Nick.

Our first Life Member ' Paddles' makes the presentation to Dick on behalf of SBGO

Paddles is once a again running our annual Super 14 competition. The competition starts the second weekend in February so be sure to contact Paddles soon with your entry/entries, remember the competition is open to member's friends, relatives and work colleagues. Prizes are:

  • 1st - $500
  • 2nd - $250
  • 3rd - $100

Entry is $25 although I do believe there is a for an extra $5 members can indulge in a members only competition. See the appropriate Super 14 section for further details.

The recent VRQ (Veterans Rugby Queensland) Mini-fest held at our grounds with all profits going to charity in this case Prostrate Cancer proved that this idea has a viable future and towards $3,500 was made on the day. It looks that it will become an annual event andalready Easts and the Crabs have already put their hands up for the next two events. Special thanks to all those SBGO's who helped VRQ notably Kevi K and Snappa make the day the success it was.

Initial News. Unfortuantely a week or so after being discharged from hospital after his heart bypass operation Beanz suffered a minor heart attach and has had to have a stent put in, also his heart is still not yet fully recovered OK and subsequently tires very quickly.

Ossie recently visited him at home were he is now recovering and found him in good spirits and keen to get down and visit us at the club sometime soon. Needless to say 'get well soon' from all the lads.

What can you say, the Mystery Dinner continues to one of the highlights if not the highlight of our social calendar. Judy and Paddles did us proud once again with a 'Bollywood' evening aboard the Kookaburra Queen. The Bollywood dancing was sensational and before long we were invited to try it ourselves andf believe me I don't expect that they anticipated such an enthusiastic response. As quick as Jack Flash the dance floor was packed with a by now well lubricated SBGO representation, in fact so much so that spillage into the aisles ensued. What followed was fun and mayhem and , at some points downright hysterical as we tried our best to follow the lead of our dance tutors. Well it was a roar but I don't expect that Bollywood will be casting an eye our ways for support roles in the next Slumdog Millionaire although,Ollie did win tickets for Bollywood dance lessons, stranger things have heppened?

Afterwards we returned to the club to be joined by Dick who had been out celebrating his 75th birthday. Needless to say a few more beers were enjoyed. Best wishes Dick....

New ! - Photo's have been updated - go and look, I dare you

And for a laugh go and see the SBGO haka recently performed in Vanuatu on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtKj29s_Lck

Once again our appreciation is extended to all those members of the Sunnybank Puffin Dragons for yet another fantastic mini-fest. We had 12 teams turn up on the day as well as the ladies/over 50 match. A big thank you to all that helped out at the bar, the BBQ, organising games, selling tickets, cleaning up, running around like a blue-ass fly etc etc. Also, it was great to see the open friendliness from all puffin dragons on the day both working the minifest and playing for other teams. Speaking to a lot of the visiting teams it was it was plainly obvious that they were mightily impressed with both the organisation and logistics of the event and that our guys were more than willing to fill the ranks and play for their teams when called upon. One quote from a visiting player stated that "The Sunnybank minifest is the best minifest and the most anticipated day in the Goldie Oldies football calendar". This is why we have a great golden oldies club - it is the people involved with the club and not least the participation and contributions from our guests as well.

Hone's Benefit Day

This was an undoubted success which eventually raised in excess of $10,000

Among those who attended were Hone's work mates at Boral, friends and family, his Dragon mates and representatives from a number of clubs including XXXX, Redland Crabs, Redcliffe, Busted Eagles, Caboulture, Palm Beach, Easts and a few others who combined to form a Barbarians side

Hone and Ruth extend their heart felt thanks to all those who contributed and took part in making the day such an enjoyable and memorable event.

Gala Dinner: Over 70 people attended what is considered to one of our finest events to dat. The Stamford Plaza provided a suitable venue and occasion for our elegantly turned out patrons. A sumptious meal was followed by an excellent live band whose stage sessions were intermingled with topical speeches from Tex, Snappa & Paddles.
