News
Once again our appreciation is extended to all those members of
the Sunnybank Puffin Dragons for yet another fantastic mini-fest.
We had 12 teams turn up on the day as well as the ladies/over 50
match. A big thank you to all that helped out at the bar, the BBQ,
organising games, selling tickets, cleaning up, running around like
a blue-ass fly etc etc. Also, it was great to see the open friendliness
from all puffin dragons on the day both working the minifest and
playing for other teams. Speaking to a lot of the visiting teams
it was it was plainly obvious that they were mightily impressed
with both the organisation and logistics of the event and that our
guys were more than willing to fill the ranks and play for their
teams when called upon. One quote from a visiting player stated
that "The Sunnybank minifest is the best minifest and the most
anticipated day in the Goldie Oldies football calendar". This
is why we have a great golden oldies club - it is the people involved
with the club and not least the participation and contributions
from our guests as well. All back safe and well from
our trip to Vanuatu.
Needless to say it was a wonderful and in every way was as good
as the Fiji trip two years ago. More soon...
Doug Robertson
(recently named Noodles, Sunnybank junior coach of the year 2007,
and referee) has just lost his daughter (Whittney Morgan Robertson)
in a car crash with a drunk driver in New Zealand, she was 23
years old. On the behalf of the Sunnybank Rugby/golden oldies
fraternity I have passed onto Doug and Maria, and Whittney's siblings;
Shane, Alex, Connor and Jaeden our sincere condolences for their
loss. I have arranged for a card to be sent to the family ensuring
Doug that the Sunnybank puffing dragon fraternity are here for
support if needed.
Rock (President)
A bit of a working party is required
for w/e 16th May, volunteers are required to erect and take down
a large marque being used for the Ladies day event. Lift @ 10am
and lower @ TBC.
Also on Saturday (16th) evening a pre-tour bbq is being held
at Macca's home for all those who are touring.
The newly formed Australian Veterans
Rugby (AVR) competition organised for w/e 11/04
has been cancelled due to lack of commitment from some clubs.
Such has been the effect of the influx of new blood into the
team (and not before time I might say after struggling to recruit
decent numbers in previous years) that Sonny was able to orgainse
a double header
against the Pine Rivers Pensioners and Goodna Bro's for the last
weekend In March. The whole evening proved to be an unqualified
success with SBGO able to field two complete teams against the
Bro's and Pensioners on seperate fields. In no small way thanks
must go to Pine Rivers for coming all this way with good numbers
anf to the Goodna boys for taking up the invitation at such short
notice.
Interest by other clubs in organising tours of their own to Vanuatu
have been expressed and needless to say we will be helping them
as much as we can. Maybe some time in the future we can hold a
joint tour and run a round robin event, food for thought?
AGM 2009: Held 21st January 2009
Rock (Darren Rokesky) is the new President
Sonny (Eugene Williams) is the new Club Captain
Ossie (Jeff Osman) continues as Treasurer
Amozz (Colin Ascroft) continues as Secretary

Juniors Signing on Weekend
Over the weekend of the 31st Jan/2nd Feb SBGO had representatives
present at the Juniors signing on day with the aim of recruiting
some new blood. All in all it was a good weekend with around a
dozen people genuinely interested in joining us, six of which
were pretty keen. The weekend also proved to be a good one regarding
consolidating our relationships with other areas of the club with
the aim of developing the club as a whole and improving our visibility
and standing within the club.
| Hone's
Benefit Day
This was an undoubted success which eventually raised in
excess of $10,000
Among those who attended were Hone's work mates at Boral,
friends and family, his Dragon mates and representatives
from a number of clubs including XXXX, Redland Crabs, Redcliffe,
Busted Eagles, Caboulture, Palm Beach, Easts and a few others
who combined to form a Barbarians side
Hone and Ruth extend their heart felt thanks to all
those who contributed and took part in making the day such
an enjoyable and memorable event.

Social Tour 2009: Vanuatu
is on the agenda for late May 2009 and Amozz is looking to get
the best deals he can regarding accomodation and flight choices.
At the moment there are close to thirty serious interested tourists.
Go on take the wife for a treat, it sure to be a great trip as
the tourists who went to Fiji can testify. Contact Amozz for further
details.
Update on Hone: Hone is now spending weekends
at home although he still has to stay in hospital during the week
for the foreseeable future. We look forward to seeing him back
soon.

Ruth & Hone
Hone collapsed on the
pitch during the Pine Rivers “Hone” game and was later
diagnosed with an aneurysm. He is now recovering from an operation
and is expected to off work for a considerable time. He has some
long service leave that he will be taking but after that until
he is allowed to drive again Hone will have no income.
SBGO will be holding a benefit day on Saturday
8th November for which a number of local teams have been invited
to attend . The benefit will includes a number of games, barbecue,
live band, music and various fund raising activities with all
proceeds going to Hone
If you can, please try and attend what is surely to be a great
day
There will also be a wheelbarrow raffle
for which Doc will be taking donations. Donations can either be
taken to his home or brought down on Wednesday night training.
Gala Dinner: Over 70 people attended what is
considered to one of our finest events to dat. The Stamford Plaza
provided a suitable venue and occasion for our elegantly turned
out patrons. A sumptious meal was followed by an excellent live
band whose stage sessions were intermingled with topical speeches
from Tex, Snappa & Paddles.

Some of the guests
Fishing Trip: Unfortunately at the last minute
due to unforeseen circumstances a number of intended travellers
had to withdraw. However those that did go had a good time although
the weather forestalled any serious fishing efforts. Still there
are some good memories of which Snappa will probably want to forget.
Sonny and Mel did a gret job organising it and are making plans
to organise another one around February somewhere a littme more
loca, Atkinson Lake or Straddie.
Our new SBGO players- I'm
sure it doesn't need me to say it but I can say that we are greatly
appreciative and impressed by the application and enthusiasm showed
by our latest recruits Glen, Greg and Peter. Their efforts on
game days and in actively participating in the festival activities
and the mundane day to day tasks around our club have not gone
unnoticed.
Festival - What
a spectacular success. The Friday "Welcome" party started
things nicely followed on Saturday by the Dinner Dance which proved
to be a great evening with good food, great band and approxately
130 happy party goers, Ithe dance floor was chokka from 8 PM onwards.
Sunday. Well some people
were wrestling with hangovers but that didn't stop the fun and
games. It was a great turnout by all the participating teams and
much revelry and a bit of rivalry were enjoyed. The barbecue and
beer sales were in overdrive with no let up between 11 AM and
8 PM. Quoting a considerable number of visitors
comments it was a "Great Day" . Well
done to all involved who made it a weekend never to forget.
Club News-
The Super 14 was again
another resounding success. Top SBGO member was Uncle. A much
deserved thanks for organising and running the competition to
Paddlles, Judy and Romany.
Te Puke to be a great
success however the apparent falling out between certain parties
has cast a shadow over proceedingsit and has consequently led
to Doc terminating his association with our club. I am hopeful
that this can be sorted out in time and any unintentional or misinterpreted
apportion of blame for what was a well organised and appealing
itinerary can be appropriately rescinded. Needless Doc's contribution
as a friend/player and fund raiser as well as an outstanding character
will be sorely missed as also will his wife Gail's efforts. Anyway
if we don't get back together "Good luck" and thanks
for everything from all of us at SBGO. What's for sure funding
will suffer with the sad loss of Darkie followed so soon by Doc.
Remember the festival
is happening soon and we all need to get behind the club and participate
and help in all the events as much as possible to make this is
a success. With the loss of some of other avenues of fund raising
recently its important that we make the most of this one.
Game News-
Early games against XXXX and GPS were good hard workouts. Against
XXXX we weren't particularly effective for the first half of the
game although we finished strongly with several tries including
three from Dick. Unfortunately home games against Redcliffe (dual
booked) and Easts (lack of numbers) had to be cancelled leaving
us with very little match practice before Te Puke.
Soon after Te Puke
was Hervey Bay. A bus was organised and accommodation booked but
unfortunately only 5 players travelled who I might say enjoyed
themselves nevertheless. Possible reasons for this are; Mothers
day weekend and too soon after the Te Puke trip. Unfortunately
lack of numbers also meant that SBGO coffers were dealt a hefty
kick.
Following HB we have
played two games. The first away at Pine Rivers saw fifteen players
turnout and partake in what was a very good natured game, as is
recent games against the Pensioners are want to be. SBGO usual
disciplined defence and platform setting was I think a little
shoddy but after a few roadies that's to be understood. Anyway,
attacking flair was a plenty and in a high scoring game Tex, Dick
and Amozz were among the scorers. The new boys Greg, Craig and
Peter all acquinted themselves and are truely settling in to Golden
Oldies rugby.
Next up was a characteristically
tough encounter at the Bullfrogs. This was a fair but hard game
(as all games with them are) and in my opinion the fifteen (including
one Bullfrog) who took part played exceptionally well. Although
we leaked a couple of unnecessary tries in the first half the
way we controlled the ball and executed good ball retention was
as good as I've seen for quite some time. Throughout the game
SBGO endeavoured to strong and aggressive in attack and indeed
had some measured success with tries resulting from a good midfield
break by Amozz who somehow contrived to inexplicably fall over
5 metres from the line, however good support from the ubiquitous
Snappa saw Tex eventually work his way over near the corner. A
good break down the left wing with some smart interchange between
Bren and his supporting players resulted in a fine team try followed
soon by another long range try resulting from nifty hand work
by Dick. On another occasion a searing break saw Calvin go close
when perhaps he deserved better. Its not wrong to say this performance
was based on a good strong forward platform which was the basis
for an overall performance which all those who took part in should
be justifiably proud of.
We cannot
allow unregistered players to play this year, because of the risk
of injury and insurer will not payout any compensation. So we
need $50 a year to play and join in the fun and frivolity
